Standing data is not in and of itself the greatest challenge facing a retailer. But it is the foundation for every other challenge you face. How can you expect accurate billing without accurate meter registers? How can you dispute a network charge if you don’t actually know whether it’s your NMI or not?

So the challenges with standing data are threefold;

1. Getting the data – what access you have defines what you can do with it. Do you have accurate information just for a single NMI ( hello MSATS blue screens of death ). Do you have easy to use extracts of the information you need? Do you need a 100 page user manual just to learn how to navigate the system that provides the data?  Getting access is indeed a major challenge.
2. Using the data – how will you get the data then to all the systems that need it? What options do you have? How long does it take – and how do you know the standing data got there?
3. Keeping up to date – standing data changes all the time. How will you keep your internal view of it up to date – and how does the new standing data get propagated through the enterprise?

Unfortunately, traditional systems for standing data find they can’t meet all three challenges at once.
